Aix-quisite Memories: GSYO in Provence

My time in Aix-En-Provence, France, marked the culmination of my journey with the Golden State Youth Orchestra. This final tour held a special place in my heart, and my friends and I were determined to make the most of it. The experience turned out to be extraordinarily memorable, with each day brimming with new adventures and discoveries.
One of the highlights of our brief visit in Aix-En-Provence was visiting the vibrant artisan market. This market was a treasure trove of handmade jewelry, stylish clothing, and unique accessories, each piece reflecting the rich artisan heritage of the region. The craftsmanship on display was impressive, and I found myself captivated by the beauty and intricacy of the items. Among the myriad of stalls, there was one dedicated to musical instruments, which naturally caught my attention as a member of the orchestra. The array of beautifully crafted instruments, each with its own unique sound and character, was fascinating, serving as a reminder of the universal language of music that had brought us to this enchanting place. 
The market spanned three extensive rows of shops, each offering a new delight to uncover. The lively atmosphere, filled with the chatter of vendors and the hum of curious shoppers, was intoxicating. As I navigated through the market, I couldn't help but marvel at the beautiful architecture that surrounded us. One of the aspects I loved most about our entire trip was the architecture of each city we visited. Despite being in the same country, each city in France had its own unique styles and quirks, making every stop on our tour a new visual and cultural experience. Aix-En-Provence was no exception, with its charming buildings and picturesque streets adding to the magic of our visit.
After a morning of exploring and shopping, we decided to take a break and enjoy a meal at a quaint sit-down restaurant nearby. Dining in France is an experience in itself, and this restaurant was no exception. While the service was leisurely, it provided us with the perfect opportunity to soak in the ambiance and reflect on our adventures. The wait for our food was well worth it, as each dish was a masterpiece, bursting with flavor. We devoured our food in just eight minutes, a testament to how scrumdiddlyumptious it was. One of the more surprising elements of our meal was the cost of water – a whopping 14 euros. It was a stark reminder of the subtle nuances of dining culture in different parts of the world.
A trip to Aix-En-Provence would not be complete without indulging in some local specialties. We made our way to L'Occitane en Provence, a renowned brand synonymous with luxury and authenticity. The shop was a haven of exquisite hand creams and skincare products, each infused with the essence of Provence. The crowning jewel of our visit was purchasing hand creams enriched with lavender, sourced directly from the sprawling fields that define the region's landscape. I found it interesting that their lavender seemed to have a slightly different scent compared to lavender found in America.
One of the traditions we carried over from our previous tour was getting gelato each day. This simple ritual added an extra layer of enjoyment to our trip. Each day, we eagerly sought out a new gelato shop, sampling a variety of flavors and delighting in the creamy, refreshing treat. This daily indulgence became a highlight of our days, providing a sweet break from our busy schedule and a chance to relax and savor the moment.
As I reflect on my time in Aix-En-Provence, it is clear that this tour was much more than a series of performances. It was an immersive experience, blending the magic of music with the rich cultural tapestry of both France and Spain. Each day brought new discoveries, from the bustling artisan market to the leisurely pace of French dining, and the indulgence of local products. The beautiful architecture of each city we visited added to the overall enchantment, making every stop unique and memorable. These memories are not just fleeting moments; they are vivid, lasting impressions that have enriched my journey with the Golden State Youth Orchestra.
This final tour was a fitting conclusion to my time with the orchestra, a celebration of the music we created together and the places it took us. Aix-En-Provence, with its charm and character, provided the perfect backdrop for this chapter. As I move forward, the lessons learned and the memories made in this enchanting city will continue to inspire and guide me. The experience was a beautiful reminder of the joys of exploration, the richness of different cultures, and the enduring power of music to bring people together. Overall, it was an extremely fun experience, and I only wish we could have spent more time in the small, picturesque cities we visited along the way. They were truly gorgeous, each one a unique gem waiting to be explored.

Tiffany Lim graduated from Mission San Jose High School and has played piano and violin for roughly 12 years. She currently studies piano under Anna Poklewski, and has been a violinist in Golden State Youth Orchestra’s Senior Symphony for the past four years. Tiffany has previously been awarded First Prize [for piano] in the Great Composer Competition (Best Chopin), as well as First Prize in the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition (Salzburg & Bonn). She will pursue Piano Performance at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in the fall. This was her second tour with GSYO, and she can say with complete certainty that these trips are entirely unforgettable. The memories you make will be ones that you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life.
