The Sinfonietta Orchestra, conducted by Music Director John Eells, is an advanced-level ensemble for middle and high school students. Sinfonietta students receive intensive training in standard orchestral repertoire. Students may progress in Sinfonietta Orchestra for multiple years and some remain through the end of high school, while others are in preparation for the Senior Symphony. The Orchestra performs original music chiefly from the classical and romantic periods.
There are weekly split rehearsals and full orchestra for all instruments. Prior to each concert program, there are specialized sectionals with professional coaches and two dress rehearsals.
The Sinfonietta Orchestra Season is launched in late August with a three-day local camp: Allegretto. The camp includes sectionals and full orchestra rehearsal. Sinfonietta performs four times each season, including the December Holiday Pops Concert at the California Theatre with the Senior Symphony. Concerts feature special guest artists and student soloists. Sinfonietta musicians are encouraged to participate in GSYO Solo Competitions.
