Camilla Kolchinsky Orchestra

The Camilla Kolchinsky Orchestra, formerly Sinfonietta Orchestra, is named after former Music Director and Conductor Emeritus Dr. Camilla Kolchinsky. Dr. Kolchinsky (1931-2016) retired from GSYO in June, 2015. In her twenty years with Golden State Youth Orchestra she instructed and inspired thousands of young musicians. Outside of GSYO founder, William Galbraith, no other person has had such an immeasurable impact on the organization. It is with great reverence to Dr. Kolchinsky’s memory that we renamed the Sinfonietta Orchestra in her honor.

The Camilla Kolchinsky Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Dr. Yun Song Tay, is an advanced-level ensemble for middle and high school students. CKO students receive intensive training in standard orchestral repertoire. Students may progress in the Camilla Kolchinsky Orchestra for multiple years and some remain through the end of high school, while others are in preparation for the Senior Symphony. The Orchestra performs original music chiefly from the classical and romantic periods.

There are regular split rehearsals and full orchestra for all instruments. Prior to each concert program, there are specialized sectionals with professional coaches and two dress rehearsals.

The Camilla Kolchinsky Orchestra Season is launched in late August with the Allegretto Weekend Retreat at UC Santa Cruz. The camp includes sectionals and full orchestra rehearsal. CKO performs four times each season, including the December Holiday Pops Concert at the California Theatre with the Senior Symphony. Concerts feature special guest artists and student soloists. Kolchinsky musicians are encouraged to participate in GSYO Solo Competitions.
