Summer Conservatory

July 13-17, 2020 Camp is Full

Recommended for musicians ages 6-14.

GSYO invites members and non-members to participate in the Golden State Youth Orchestra Summer Music Conservatory Program. To accommodate the health and safety of the musicians, faculty, and staff, GSYO is introducing an online program for this summer.

The Session will be held on Zoom starting Monday, July 13 through Friday, July 17; 9:30am-11:30am. Participants must have access to a device that supports Zoom as well as video and audio.

The fee for the program is $175. Fees are non-refundable.* If you plan to participate, please use the "register now" button at the top of the page and fill out the form. You will then receive an invoice from GSYO for payment. Your space is not guaranteed until the fee is received by GSYO.

To offer the best interactive experience for the musicians, space in the camp is limited. Once the program reaches capacity, we will start a waiting list.

*For those who previously enrolled in the in-person 2020 Summer Conservatory program: you will contacted about canceling your registration and receiving a full refund, or participating in the online program, with a partial refund (minus the fees due for the distance classes).

As our faculty continues to develop the curriculum for our program, we wanted to share what a typical day's schedule might look like:

9:30-9:40am: Greetings, icebreakers, morning warm ups

9:40-10:10am: Preparing a strong audition - During the workshop, faculty will share best strategies for audition preparation and help students train to record a mock audition. Students will learn how to identify areas for personal growth, set musical goals, design and implement effective practice strategies, and evaluate their own progress towards their goals.

10:10-10:40am: Musicianship lessons with interactive games - Some activities will be for the whole group while others will be in smaller teams, offering chances for musicians to interact with a smaller group of peers. Musicianship categories could include music theory, music history, ear training, or guided listening.

10:40-11:20am: Guided group practice time - Students will get out their instruments and work on their personal audition goals.(Please note that there will be an opportunity for a quick bathroom/snack break if needed.) This time will include both community practice time and smaller group tutoring sessions with faculty.

11:20-11:30am: Closing group activity

During some of the camp time, musicians will be working on the following materials for a mock audition:

  • One scale (student's choice)
  • A 1-2 minute excerpt from a solo that musicians are currently working on during private lessons
  • A short, assigned excerpt that musicians will receive on the first day of the conservatory
